Rainy Chicago Wedding at City Winery | Helin + Beth |
Everyone gets nervous about a rainy wedding in Chicago. There’s a lot of superstitions when it comes to a wedding, perhaps the loudest of all that rain on your wedding day is good luck. It’s said that a rope knot that gets wet is extremely hard to untie – so, when you “tie the knot” on a rainy day, your marriage is just as difficult to unravel. I’m not sure if this folklore really comes from any true beliefs, or if it was simply created to calm the nerves of couples getting married on rainy days all over this world, but I think all that really matters when it comes to your wedding day weather is that you’re prepared with a backup plan, and armed with an awesome attitude. Lucky for me, Helin + Beth were all smiles on their wedding day, one of rainiest Chicago wedding days I’ve ever photographed. It truly poured rain all. dang. day, but these two were so thrilled to be marrying each other, it didn't matter. We had an absolute blast driving around town and hitting some of my favorite rainy-day photo locations, like the Chicago Cultural Center and Navy Pier’s Crystal Gardens, and they were even up for stepping out into the rainy streets with my bubble umbrellas, which made for some of my favorite photos of the day.
While “traditionally” rain on your wedding day wouldn’t be ideal, Helin + Beth took it in stride, perhaps partially because they’d already tossed away many of the wedding traditions that didn’t fit their celebration; rocking colorful dresses in favor of white, and cutting a cheese cake ( literally, a cake made of cheese!!!!) most notably. Their City Winery wedding was a joyous celebration with lots of vino, cheese (see above), and dancing; a true celebration of the love and life Helin + Beth share. These two gorgeous brides went above and beyond to make their wedding a welcoming environment for all of the many kinds of family that make up their world, chosen family included. Helin + Beth even outfitted the City Winery barrel room with costumes, facepainting, balloons, and games for all of the kids present. However, it’s safe to say that the adults enjoyed these amenities (especially the glow sticks) just as much as the kids, yours truly included.
I had an amazing time traipsing around a very rainy Chicago with these two incredibly kind, beautiful, and funny brides. I feel truly lucky to have witnessed and celebrated their union, and to have been so welcomed into their world. I am so excited to share some of my favorite photos from this laid back, fun, intimate and beautiful wedding day below:
Thank you, Helin + Beth for having me with you on your wedding day. I wish you so many, many years of joyous partnership and grand adventure!
